Ageing Better in Birmingham: Tyburn Local Action Plan (LAP) Evaluation of Four Projects to Tackle Social Isolation and Loneliness amongst Older Residents

M·E·L Research is delighted to have been commissioned by Birmingham Voluntary Service Council (BVSC, lead organisation for Ageing Better in Birmingham which is a six-year programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund) to evaluate four projects within the Ageing Better in Birmingham Tyburn Local Action Plan over two years.

Each project has different timescales but will involve a broadly common evaluation methodology involving a mixed methods approach. For all four projects, the evaluation will explore the effectiveness of delivery, assess progress against key outcomes, and identify lessons learned.

The overall aim of the Ageing Better in Birmingham programme is to facilitate change in the way older people are considered by and within communities to empower citizens to take part in and influence activities, in order to reduce isolation in later life. The programme works at neighbourhood level using a grassroots, assets-based approach to creating a new movement for community action on ageing and isolation.

The Tyburn Ward was identified as a priority site as previous research revealed the social isolation risks associated with this outer-city area of the City. The four projects M·E·L Research is evaluating are:

  • Community Organisers Scheme (to promote neighbourliness and better connect communities);
  • Good Neighbour Campaign (to strengthen a sense of community and reduce social isolation);
  • Walking Maps (to devise practical routes to facilitate easy and safe walking to navigate the local poor physical environment, overcome social isolation and lead to healthier lifestyles); and
  • Care and Repair Scheme (to improve the physical environment of highways and rights of way and contribute to an age-friendly neighbourhood).
